JohnCaglioneJr.com - Award Winning Makeup Artist+ John began his career in New York. At the age of 15, he met Dick Smith - whom he considers the greatest makeup artist of all time. Smith’s film credits include The Godfather and The Exorcist. John would three years later become a protégé of Smith’s and gain experience working as a staff makeup artist for NBC television. It was during the mid 1970’s when John worked at the network doing beauty makeup for news, soap operas and morning shows including The Today Show. Saturday Night Live was a new hit on NBC in NY, having only premiered a year earlier. It was not long before John found himself working alongside cast members John Belushi, Gilda Radner and Dan Aykroyd. During his six years in television, he honed his craft. His first feature film was Quest For Fire starring Ron Perlman. The film demanded extensive prosthetic makeups of early man. John designed many makeups earning the film an Academy Award for Best Makeup. The film was the second film in Oscar history to win in that category. Quest For Fire introduced him into the film industry, working freelance on films including: Zelig starring Woody Allen. The film featured numerous character makeups on Allen earning John the British Academy Award Nomination (BAFTA). Other films that followed included Cotton Club, Year of the Dragon, and Manhunter. In 1988, John struck gold by being awarded Warren Beatty’s Dick Tracy as Character Makeup Designer. The film starred Beatty, Al Pacino, Madonna and Dustin Hoffman. Dick Tracy won the Academy Award and British Academy award (BAFTA) for Best Makeup. John’s credits since Dick Tracy include Donnie Brasco, The Insider, Heat, Mona Lisa Smile, Angels in America and My Super Ex Girlfriend. His more recent work can be seen in Martin Scorcese’s The Departed and as Russell Crowe’s makeup artist on the features American Gangster and 3:10 to Yuma. Currently he is working on The Dark Knight a Christopher Nolan film.
